Our care, where you live
Our live-in care in Wandsworth
Live-in care means one-to-one support in your own home: personal care, medication support, meals, help around the house, getting out and about, and someone close by at night. Whether it suits the person, and whether one carer can support a couple, is worked out at the free assessment. Read more in live-in care explained and how it works day to day.
How we arrange live-in care in Wandsworth
Day and Nightcare provides fully managed live-in care across Wandsworth, from £1,550 a week. One main carer lives in the home; a relief carer covers their holidays and time off, and a manager is on call. Care starts with a free assessment, a written quote and a written care plan.
Care can be paid for privately, by Wandsworth Council (including direct payments) or by NHS Continuing Healthcare. We have provided Discharge to Assess (D2A) care since 2014. If someone is in hospital, tell us the expected discharge date (see care after hospital). Our care team is on 01865 715780.

What to expect on money, from the council’s 2026-27 contributions policy:
- The financial assessment and the care plan are not charged for. Reablement for up to six weeks, and community equipment and minor adaptations under £1,000, are not charged for either.
- Other care at home is means-tested through a financial assessment.
- Self-funders who ask the council to arrange their care pay the full cost plus a £61.10 weekly arrangement fee. You can also arrange live-in care directly with a provider; see the cost of live-in care.
A family carer can ask for a carer’s assessment through the council’s AI carer’s support service online, or by phone on 020 8871 7707. The Carer’s Emergency Card Scheme helps you plan cover for the person you look after if something happens to you.
For council tax, people who are severely mentally impaired are disregarded if they receive a qualifying benefit such as Attendance Allowance; the council contacts their doctor to confirm. A carer who lives with and cares for a disabled person receiving certain benefits, for at least 35 hours a week on average, is also disregarded, and the disabled band reduction applies to homes significantly altered for a disabled person. See council tax discounts for care.

Your questions
Questions about live-in care in Wandsworth
Who do I call in Wandsworth to ask for a care assessment?
Wandsworth Council's Adult Social Care team works Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. It asks you to use its online enquiry form or the online self-referral, which you can also complete for someone else; the form asks whether they consent to sharing their information. If you cannot use the forms, call 020 8871 7707 or email adultsocialcare@wandsworth.gov.uk. In an emergency outside office hours, the Out of Hours team is on 020 8871 8999: weekdays 5pm to 8am, and 24 hours at weekends and on bank holidays.
Does Wandsworth Council charge self-funders to arrange care?
Yes. Under the council's Adult Social Care Contributions Policy 2026-27, people with savings above the upper capital limit who ask the council to arrange their care pay the full cost of that care plus an arrangement fee of £61.10 a week from 1 April 2026, invoiced monthly in arrears. You sign an agreement before it is charged. The needs assessment, financial assessment and care plan are not charged for, and the fee does not apply to people paying full cost because of their income.
How long does reablement last in Wandsworth?
The council's Reablement Service usually lasts from a few days up to four weeks, and can be extended by up to two more weeks. A lead worker visits at least once a week, and care workers can visit up to four times a day. You can contact the council, ask your GP or a friend or family member to refer you, or the hospital may refer as part of discharge planning. Reablement for up to six weeks is not charged for under the council's 2026-27 contributions policy.
How can a carer in Wandsworth get a carer's assessment?
You can use the council's AI carer's support service online, at a time that suits you, and pause and return to it; what you share is reviewed by experienced social workers. If you prefer, speak to Adult Social Care on 020 8871 7707 or email accessteam@wandsworth.gov.uk. The council's Carer's Emergency Card Scheme gives you a card with a 24-hour helpline and a plan for the person you look after if something happens to you. Wandsworth Carers' Centre is on 020 8877 1200.
How much does live-in care cost in Wandsworth?
Live-in care with Day and Nightcare costs from £1,550 a week in Wandsworth, the same as everywhere in England, for one person with a carer who rests at night. That includes our care team's management (the assessment, care plan, reviews, supervision and the on-call manager) and the carer's food; break cover and the carer's travel are extra. For a couple it is from £1,800 a week, where one carer can safely meet both partners' needs. You receive a written quote after a free assessment.
Can the council help pay for live-in care in Wandsworth?
Yes, if the person's care needs meet the national eligibility criteria and their savings are below £23,250 (2026/27). Adult social care in Wandsworth is arranged by Wandsworth Council. Ask for a care needs assessment; if you are eligible, council funding can usually be taken as a direct payment and used for live-in care from us.
Can live-in care start when someone leaves St George's Hospital?
It can. Tell us the expected discharge date as early as you can, and we will work with you and the ward's discharge team on when live-in care can start. We can often start within 24 to 48 hours of the assessment, depending on carer availability, and we confirm the start date once a carer is arranged. We have provided Discharge to Assess (D2A) care since 2014.
