Our care, where you live
Our live-in care in Northamptonshire
Live-in care means one-to-one support in your own home: personal care, medication support, meals, help around the house, getting out and about, and someone close by at night. Whether it suits the person, and whether one carer can support a couple, is worked out at the free assessment. Read more in live-in care explained and how it works day to day.
How we arrange live-in care in Northamptonshire
Day and Nightcare provides fully managed live-in care across Northamptonshire, from £1,550 a week. One main carer lives in the home; a relief carer covers their holidays and time off, and a manager is on call. Care starts with a free assessment, a written quote and a written care plan.
Care can be paid for privately, by West or North Northamptonshire Council (including direct payments) or by NHS Continuing Healthcare. We have provided Discharge to Assess (D2A) care since 2014. If someone is in hospital, tell us the expected discharge date (see live-in care after hospital). Our care team is on 01865 715780.
Arranging care and funding in Northamptonshire
Since 1 April 2021 Northamptonshire has had two unitary councils. Each runs adult social care, carers’ support and council tax for its own area, so start with the council that covers your relative’s home.

- West Northamptonshire Council covers the former Daventry, Northampton and South Northamptonshire districts, including Towcester and Brackley. Call adult social care on 0300 126 7000 (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm), or use its online form to refer yourself or someone else; a family member can call on your relative’s behalf with their consent. If someone is in immediate danger, call 999.
- North Northamptonshire Council covers the former Corby, East Northamptonshire, Kettering and Wellingborough districts, including Rushden and Oundle. To ask for an assessment, use its online self-referral form or call 0300 126 3000 and select Option 1, Option 2 and Option 1. Its lines are open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm (closed on bank holidays), and the same number reaches its Out-of-Hours Duty Team.
When you call West Northamptonshire, have your relative’s date of birth, address, GP and next of kin to hand; it may also ask what has changed and who helps.
The needs assessment is free, and anyone can ask for one. A financial assessment follows. With more than £23,250 in savings your relative would usually pay the full cost, and the home is not counted when care is at home.
Carers’ assessments. Both councils say theirs are carried out by Northamptonshire Carers. The assessment is free, and you can have one even if the person you care for gets no help from the council. See our guide to carers’ assessments.
Council tax. Ask your relative’s council about the severe mental impairment disregard or exemption, the carer disregard, and disability reductions. See council tax discounts for care.
Urgent care and leaving hospital in Northamptonshire
- A&E, west: Northampton General Hospital, Cliftonville, open 24 hours. Its new Emergency Department entrance and Urgent Treatment Centre is now the main way in for all urgent and emergency care; patients are assessed on arrival and sent to the right service.
- A&E, north: Kettering General Hospital, Rothwell Road, open 24 hours, for North Northamptonshire and south Leicestershire.
- Urgent treatment, Corby: Corby Urgent Treatment Centre is open every day, 8am to 8pm, for minor injuries and illnesses such as cuts, sprains and minor burns. It is not an A&E.
At Northampton General, ask the medical team early for an approximate discharge date; hospital transport can be arranged if your relative meets the eligibility criteria. In West Northamptonshire, a member of the Transfer of Care Hub visits the ward to plan the support needed and tells you what has been arranged.
At Kettering General, the Discharge Lounge (Sir Thomas Moore ward, car park A) is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week (01536 491219), with drinks, snacks and hot meals while patients wait for medicines, paperwork or transport.
In North Northamptonshire, the council’s Reablement North team gives short-term support at home for a few days up to six weeks, after a referral by a healthcare professional. It is free at the start; a financial assessment decides any charge for ongoing support. In Corby, Thackley Green offers short-term specialist reablement.
NHS Continuing Healthcare is arranged by NHS Northamptonshire Integrated Care Board’s All Age Continuing Care service, for anyone with a Northamptonshire GP (01604 347415).

Your questions
Questions about live-in care in Northamptonshire
Who do I call in Northamptonshire to ask for a care assessment?
It depends which council area your relative lives in. For Northampton, Daventry, Towcester, Brackley and the villages around them, call West Northamptonshire Council on 0300 126 7000 (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm). For Kettering, Corby, Wellingborough, Rushden, Oundle and the villages around them, call North Northamptonshire Council on 0300 126 3000 and select Option 1, Option 2 and Option 1. Both councils also have an online form for referring yourself or someone else.
Who carries out carers' assessments in Northamptonshire?
Both councils say their carers' assessments are carried out by Northamptonshire Carers, a charity based in Wellingborough. Its Carer Support Line is on 01933 677907 (option 2, weekdays), or you can register online. The assessment is free, and you can have one even if the person you look after gets no help from the council.
Who arranges NHS Continuing Healthcare in Northamptonshire?
NHS Northamptonshire Integrated Care Board, through its All Age Continuing Care service, for anyone registered with a Northamptonshire GP: call 01604 347415 or email northantsicb.chc.teamgeneral@nhs.net. The first checklist can be completed by a nurse, doctor, other healthcare professional or social worker. If care is needed urgently, for example because someone is terminally ill, the NHS says the assessment may be fast-tracked.
Is there a dementia service in Northamptonshire that families can contact directly?
Yes. Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust's Admiral Nurse service gives free one-to-one support to people affected by dementia and their families, and accepts self-referrals on 07766 780203 or by email. A diagnosis comes through the trust's Memory Assessment Service for people over 65, which takes referrals only from GPs, hospital specialists or other trust services, so the first step is the GP.
How much does live-in care cost in Northamptonshire?
Live-in care with Day and Nightcare costs from £1,550 a week anywhere in Northamptonshire, the same as everywhere in England, for one person with a carer who rests at night. That includes our care team's management (the assessment, care plan, reviews, supervision and the on-call manager) and the carer's food; break cover and the carer's travel are extra. For a couple it is from £1,800 a week, where one carer can safely meet both partners' needs. You receive a written quote after a free assessment.
Can the council help pay for live-in care in Northamptonshire?
Yes, if the person's care needs meet the national eligibility criteria and their savings are below £23,250 (2026/27). Adult social care in Northamptonshire is arranged by West Northamptonshire Council and North Northamptonshire Council. Ask for a care needs assessment; if you are eligible, council funding can usually be taken as a direct payment and used for live-in care from us.
Can live-in care start when someone leaves Northampton General Hospital?
It can. Tell us the expected discharge date as early as you can, and we will work with you and the ward's discharge team on when live-in care can start. We can often start within 24 to 48 hours of the assessment, depending on carer availability, and we confirm the start date once a carer is arranged. We have provided Discharge to Assess (D2A) care since 2014.
How would live-in care be supported in Northamptonshire?
Our care team supports every live-in placement, wherever it is in England: a free assessment, a written care plan, regular contact and reviews, one main live-in carer, with a relief carer covering holidays and time off, and a manager on call outside office hours. Your carer works alongside the person's own GP, community nurses and any hospice team already involved in their care.
