Our care, where you live

Our live-in care in Ivybridge

Live-in care means one-to-one support in your own home: personal care, medication support, meals, help around the house, getting out and about, and someone close by at night. Whether it suits the person, and whether one carer can support a couple, is worked out at the free assessment. Read more in live-in care explained and how it works day to day.

How we arrange live-in care in Ivybridge

Day and Nightcare provides fully managed live-in care in Ivybridge and the villages around it, from £1,550 a week. One main carer lives in the home; a relief carer covers their holidays and time off, and a manager is on call. Care starts with a free assessment, a written quote and a written care plan.

Care can be paid for privately, by Devon County Council (including direct payments) or by NHS Continuing Healthcare. We have provided Discharge to Assess (D2A) care since 2014. If someone is in hospital, tell us the expected discharge date (see care after hospital). Our care team is on 01865 715780.

With savings above £23,250 your relative pays the full cost of council-arranged care, and savings below £14,250 are ignored; for care at home, the home is not counted. Client Financial Services answers charging questions on 01392 384391 (9am to 1pm on weekdays). After a hospital stay, ask about free Social Care Reablement, usually for one to four weeks; the council’s Rapid Support Service, launched in July 2025, gives short-term reablement for people leaving hospital. See council funding for care.

Family carers can book a carer’s assessment through the Caring in Devon Helpline, 03456 434 435 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm), by phone or in person.

South Hams District Council collects council tax. A carer who lives with the person and gives at least 35 hours of care a week may not be counted, where the person cared for gets a benefit such as Attendance Allowance and is not their partner. A severe mental impairment, confirmed by a doctor or other health professional, can bring a discount or, for someone living alone, an exemption. An adapted home, or one where a disabled resident uses a wheelchair indoors, can be moved down a band. See council tax discounts for care.

Who do I call in Ivybridge to ask for a care assessment?

Devon County Council runs adult social care in Ivybridge, even though the town is close to Plymouth. Call Adult Social Care on 0345 155 1007 (Monday to Thursday 9am to 5pm, Friday 9am to 4pm) and choose the Care Direct Plus Southern team, which covers Ivybridge. You can also start with the council's online self-help tool, which may lead to an online self-assessment. For an emergency out of hours that cannot wait until the next day, call 0345 600 0388 and choose option 1.

Is there a minor injuries unit in Ivybridge?

No, there is no minor injuries unit in Ivybridge itself. University Hospitals Plymouth runs the Urgent Treatment Centre in the Dartmoor Building at Derriford Hospital, open 8am to 8pm every day with X-ray (01752 438320), and the walk-in minor injury unit at South Hams Hospital in Kingsbridge, open 8.30am to 5.30pm every day (01548 852349). Totnes Minor Injuries Unit books same-day appointments on 01803 862622, option 1. None of these is an A&E. If you are unsure where to go, call NHS 111; in an emergency, call 999.

Is there community transport in Ivybridge?

Yes. Ivybridge Ring and Ride, at the Watermark, runs door-to-door minibus trips for people who find ordinary buses difficult because of age or mobility; you need to register first. Its volunteer community car scheme, which for now takes only medical appointments because it is short of drivers, charges a £4 booking fee plus 55p a mile for the driver's own miles and 60p a mile with the passenger, minimum £6.60, paid in cash; book at least two working days ahead. Call 01752 690444, weekdays 9am to noon.

Which hospice serves Ivybridge?

St Luke's Hospice Plymouth. Its catchment covers Plymouth and the surrounding areas of South West Devon, including Ivybridge, Kingsbridge, Salcombe and Tavistock. St Luke's care is free. A GP, hospital doctor, district nurse or palliative care team makes the referral, and its urgent care team is available from 8am to 10pm, seven days a week. General enquiries: 01752 401172; St Luke's at home: 01752 964200.

How much does live-in care cost in Ivybridge?

Live-in care with Day and Nightcare costs from £1,550 a week in Ivybridge, the same as everywhere in England, for one person with a carer who rests at night. That includes our care team's management (the assessment, care plan, reviews, supervision and the on-call manager) and the carer's food; break cover and the carer's travel are extra. For a couple it is from £1,800 a week, where one carer can safely meet both partners' needs. You receive a written quote after a free assessment.

Can the council help pay for live-in care in Ivybridge?

Yes, if the person's care needs meet the national eligibility criteria and their savings are below £23,250 (2026/27). Adult social care in Ivybridge is arranged by Devon County Council. Ask for a care needs assessment; if you are eligible, council funding can usually be taken as a direct payment and used for live-in care from us.

Can live-in care start when someone leaves Derriford Hospital?

It can. Tell us the expected discharge date as early as you can, and we will work with you and the ward's discharge team on when live-in care can start. We can often start within 24 to 48 hours of the assessment, depending on carer availability, and we confirm the start date once a carer is arranged. We have provided Discharge to Assess (D2A) care since 2014.
