Our care, where you live

Our live-in care in Tavistock

Live-in care means one-to-one support in your own home: personal care, medication support, meals, help around the house, getting out and about, and someone close by at night. Whether it suits the person, and whether one carer can support a couple, is worked out at the free assessment. Read more in live-in care explained and how it works day to day.

How we arrange live-in care in Tavistock

Day and Nightcare provides fully managed live-in care in Tavistock and the villages around it, from £1,550 a week. One main carer lives in the home; a relief carer covers their holidays and time off, and a manager is on call. Care starts with a free assessment, a written quote and a written care plan.

Care can be paid for privately, by Devon County Council (including direct payments) or by NHS Continuing Healthcare. We have provided Discharge to Assess (D2A) care since 2014. If someone is in hospital, tell us the expected discharge date (see care after hospital). Our care team is on 01865 715780.

With savings above £23,250 your relative pays the full cost of council-arranged care, and savings below £14,250 are ignored; for care at home, the home is not counted. Charging questions go to Client Financial Services on 01392 384391 (9am to 1pm on weekdays). See council funding for care.

After a hospital stay, ask about free Social Care Reablement, usually for one to four weeks; the council’s Rapid Support Service, launched in July 2025, gives short-term reablement to people leaving hospital.

Family carers can book a carer’s assessment through the Caring in Devon Helpline, 03456 434 435 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm).

West Devon Borough Council collects council tax. A carer who lives with someone and gives at least 35 hours of care a week may not be counted, if the person cared for gets a benefit such as Attendance Allowance and is not their partner. A severe mental impairment must be confirmed by a doctor or other health professional; someone in that position living alone pays nothing. A disabled resident who needs a room, an extra bathroom or kitchen, or space for a wheelchair indoors can have the bill moved down a band. See council tax discounts for care.

Your questions

Questions about live-in care in Tavistock

Who do I call in Tavistock to ask for a care assessment?

Devon County Council, not Plymouth City Council, runs adult social care in Tavistock, even though most hospital care comes from Plymouth. Call Adult Social Care on 0345 155 1007 (Monday to Thursday 9am to 5pm, Friday 9am to 4pm) and choose the Care Direct Plus Southern team, which covers Tavistock. You can also start with the council's online self-help tool. For an emergency out of hours that cannot wait until the next day, call 0345 600 0388 and choose option 1.

Is the minor injury unit at Tavistock Hospital open every day?

Yes. The Minor Injury Unit at Tavistock Hospital, Spring Hill, is open 8.30am to 5.30pm, seven days a week, and you can walk in without an appointment. Nurse practitioners assess and treat people of all ages. X-ray is usually available 9am to 5pm on weekdays only, not at weekends or on bank holidays. Call 01822 612233. It is not an A&E: for anything life-threatening, call 999; the nearest emergency department is at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth.

Who helps older people get to hospital appointments from Tavistock?

Tavistock Area Support Services (TASS) runs a volunteer car service to health and hospital appointments. You pay the driver in cash at the end of the journey: an £8 admin fee, 45p a mile for the driver's miles to and from your home, and 55p a mile for the journey with you. The driver waits up to two hours; longer appointments are charged as a double journey. Call TASS on 01822 616958 (weekdays, 9.30am to 2pm). TASS also has a wheelchair-adapted car for hire, and hires out wheelchairs (£12 for 24 hours) and electric mobility scooters (£20 for 24 hours), each with a refundable deposit.

Is there a memory café in Tavistock?

Yes. Tavistock Memory Cafe meets on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month, with sessions from 11am to 12.30pm and 2pm to 3.30pm, at the TASS Anchorage Centre on Chapel Street. It is free, welcomes people living with dementia and their carers, family and friends, and offers activities, peer support and speakers. Places need booking in advance; contact details are on the Devon Memory Cafe Consortium listing. For a diagnosis, start with the GP.

How much does live-in care cost in Tavistock?

Live-in care with Day and Nightcare costs from £1,550 a week in Tavistock, the same as everywhere in England, for one person with a carer who rests at night. That includes our care team's management (the assessment, care plan, reviews, supervision and the on-call manager) and the carer's food; break cover and the carer's travel are extra. For a couple it is from £1,800 a week, where one carer can safely meet both partners' needs. You receive a written quote after a free assessment.

Can the council help pay for live-in care in Tavistock?

Yes, if the person's care needs meet the national eligibility criteria and their savings are below £23,250 (2026/27). Adult social care in Tavistock is arranged by Devon County Council. Ask for a care needs assessment; if you are eligible, council funding can usually be taken as a direct payment and used for live-in care from us.

Can live-in care start when someone leaves Derriford Hospital?

It can. Tell us the expected discharge date as early as you can, and we will work with you and the ward's discharge team on when live-in care can start. We can often start within 24 to 48 hours of the assessment, depending on carer availability, and we confirm the start date once a carer is arranged. We have provided Discharge to Assess (D2A) care since 2014.
