Our care, where you live

Our live-in care in Okehampton

Live-in care means one-to-one support in your own home: personal care, medication support, meals, help around the house, getting out and about, and someone close by at night. Whether it suits the person, and whether one carer can support a couple, is worked out at the free assessment. Read more in live-in care explained and how it works day to day.

How we arrange live-in care in Okehampton

Day and Nightcare provides fully managed live-in care in Okehampton and the villages around it, from £1,550 a week. One main carer lives in the home; a relief carer covers their holidays and time off, and a manager is on call. Care starts with a free assessment, a written quote and a written care plan.

Care can be paid for privately, by Devon County Council (including direct payments) or by NHS Continuing Healthcare. We have provided Discharge to Assess (D2A) care since 2014. If someone is in hospital, tell us the expected discharge date (see care after hospital). Our care team is on 01865 715780.

With savings above £23,250 your relative pays the full cost of council-arranged care; for care at home, the home itself is not counted. Charging questions go to Client Financial Services on 01392 384391 (9am to 1pm on weekdays). See council funding for care.

After a hospital stay or illness, ask about free Social Care Reablement, usually for one to four weeks; the council’s Rapid Support Service, launched in July 2025, gives short-term reablement for people leaving hospital. See reablement.

Family carers can book a carer’s assessment through the Caring in Devon Helpline, 03456 434 435 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm), by phone or in person.

West Devon Borough Council collects council tax. A carer who lives with someone and gives at least 35 hours of care a week may not be counted, if the person cared for gets a benefit such as Attendance Allowance and is not their partner. A severe mental impairment must be confirmed by a doctor or other health professional, and the person must qualify for a listed benefit even if age means they do not claim it; someone in that position living alone pays nothing. See council tax discounts for care.

  • Minor injuries: Okehampton Medical Centre, East Street (01837 52233), Monday to Friday 8.15am to 6pm, for injuries in the last three days; no X-ray, not for children under two, and not an A&E. At weekends, call NHS 111.
  • A&E: the Emergency Department at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital (Wonford), Exeter (switchboard 01392 411611).

Royal Devon starts planning for home straight away and tries to get people home, or to the discharge lounge, before lunchtime. The lounge, near the main entrance, is open 7.30am to 8pm on weekdays and 10am to 6pm at weekends and on bank holidays; its staff contact family or carers and order transport.

Okehampton Hospital on Cavell Way (01837 658 000) has no medical inpatient beds but holds outpatient clinics and has X-ray.

For NHS Continuing Healthcare, NHS Devon works through three local hubs. Families cannot apply directly: ask a district nurse, community nurse or social worker to consider the checklist; they send it to the right hub. Someone whose condition is rapidly deteriorating can be referred through the Fast Track.

Your questions

Questions about live-in care in Okehampton

Who do I call in Okehampton to ask for a care assessment?

Devon County Council runs adult social care in Okehampton. Call Adult Social Care on 0345 155 1007 (Monday to Thursday 9am to 5pm, Friday 9am to 4pm). Although Okehampton is in West Devon, the council lists the town under its Care Direct Plus Eastern team, so choose Eastern. You can also start with the council's online self-help tool, which may lead to an online self-assessment. For an emergency out of hours that cannot wait until the next day, call 0345 600 0388 and choose option 1.

Where do we go for minor injuries in Okehampton?

The minor injuries service is at Okehampton Medical Centre on East Street, not the hospital. It runs Monday to Friday, 8.15am to 6pm, for injuries that happened in the last three days. It has no X-ray, is not suitable for children under two and is not an A&E; at weekends, call NHS 111. If a broken bone is suspected, the practice suggests the minor injury unit at Launceston, which has X-ray, once you have checked it is open. In a life-threatening emergency, call 999.

Is there community transport in Okehampton?

Yes. Okehampton District Community Transport Group (01837 55000, 8.30am to 4pm weekdays) runs a Ring and Ride minibus that collects people from home and takes them into town, serving different villages on different weekdays: £7 return from rural areas and £5 within town, booked at least a day ahead. Its volunteer Community Car costs 60p a mile, with a minimum of £6 for journeys of seven miles or less and a £3 booking fee on longer journeys, and needs 48 hours' notice. A wheelchair-accessible vehicle is available at 85p a mile from the Okehampton base.

Which hospice supports people in Okehampton?

Hospiscare supports people across the heart of Devon, from Exeter to Okehampton. Its Okehampton Specialist Nursing Team of clinical nurse specialists visits people in their own homes, in community hospitals and in care homes, helping with complex symptoms and giving emotional and practical support alongside the GP. Call Hospiscare on 01392 688000 or its clinical services line on 01392 688040; both are open 8am to 5pm, seven days a week.

How much does live-in care cost in Okehampton?

Live-in care with Day and Nightcare costs from £1,550 a week in Okehampton, the same as everywhere in England, for one person with a carer who rests at night. That includes our care team's management (the assessment, care plan, reviews, supervision and the on-call manager) and the carer's food; break cover and the carer's travel are extra. For a couple it is from £1,800 a week, where one carer can safely meet both partners' needs. You receive a written quote after a free assessment.

Can the council help pay for live-in care in Okehampton?

Yes, if the person's care needs meet the national eligibility criteria and their savings are below £23,250 (2026/27). Adult social care in Okehampton is arranged by Devon County Council. Ask for a care needs assessment; if you are eligible, council funding can usually be taken as a direct payment and used for live-in care from us.

Can live-in care start when someone leaves Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital (Wonford)?

It can. Tell us the expected discharge date as early as you can, and we will work with you and the ward's discharge team on when live-in care can start. We can often start within 24 to 48 hours of the assessment, depending on carer availability, and we confirm the start date once a carer is arranged. We have provided Discharge to Assess (D2A) care since 2014.
