Our care, where you live

Our live-in care in Newton Abbot

Live-in care means one-to-one support in your own home: personal care, medication support, meals, help around the house, getting out and about, and someone close by at night. Whether it suits the person, and whether one carer can support a couple, is worked out at the free assessment. Read more in live-in care explained and how it works day to day.

How we arrange live-in care in Newton Abbot

Day and Nightcare provides fully managed live-in care in Newton Abbot and the villages around it, from £1,550 a week. One main carer lives in the home; a relief carer covers their holidays and time off, and a manager is on call. Care starts with a free assessment, a written quote and a written care plan.

Care can be paid for privately, by Devon County Council (including direct payments) or by NHS Continuing Healthcare. We have provided Discharge to Assess (D2A) care since 2014. If someone is in hospital, tell us the expected discharge date (see care after hospital). Our care team is on 01865 715780.

Arranging care and funding in Newton Abbot

After a hospital stay or illness, ask about the council’s free Social Care Reablement Service, typically for one to four weeks, which helps people relearn tasks such as washing, dressing and preparing meals; see our reablement guide.

Devon’s charging rules say that with more than £23,250 in capital your relative pays the full cost; below £14,250 savings are ignored. For care at home, their own home is not counted. See council funding for care.

Family carers can book a carer’s assessment through the Caring in Devon Helpline on 03456 434 435 (weekdays 8am to 5pm), by phone or in person; the person you care for does not need to have any care services.

Teignbridge District Council collects council tax (01626 361101). Three reductions help:

  • a carer who lives with someone and cares for them at least 35 hours a week is not counted, if the carer is not their partner and the person cared for receives a benefit such as Attendance Allowance
  • someone who is severely mentally impaired is not counted; the form includes a medical certificate signed by their doctor, which Teignbridge says costs nothing
  • a disabled band reduction bills an adapted home one band lower

None is automatic. See council tax discounts for care.

Urgent care and leaving hospital in Newton Abbot

  • Urgent treatment centre: at Newton Abbot Community Hospital, West Golds Road, 8am to 8pm every day. Book a same-day appointment on 01626 324631; walk-ins wait longer. It is not an A&E.
  • A&E: the Emergency Department at Torbay Hospital in Torquay (01803 654003).

At Torbay Hospital, planning for home starts at admission, and a discharge coordinator talks through options, funding and practicalities. Some people then move to a community hospital to build up their strength. Newton Abbot Community Hospital (switchboard 01626 324500) has two 30-bed wards, Teign and Templer, including stroke rehabilitation and neuro specialist beds; registered carers park free.

If your relative’s needs are mainly health needs, ask about NHS Continuing Healthcare. It is run for Newton Abbot by the Torbay and South Devon team at Sherborne House, Kingsteignton Road (01626 357820).

What may change soon

On 29 October 2026 the Government withdrew its earlier decision on reorganising councils in Devon, Plymouth and Torbay and will decide again by early 2027. Until then, Devon County Council arranges adult social care and Teignbridge District Council collects council tax.

Your questions

Questions about live-in care in Newton Abbot

Who do I call in Newton Abbot to ask for a care assessment?

Call Devon County Council's Adult Social Care on 0345 155 1007 (Monday to Thursday 9am to 5pm, Friday 9am to 4pm) and choose the Care Direct Plus Southern team, which covers Newton Abbot. You can also start with the council's online self-help tool, which may lead to an online self-assessment; the team will help if you need it. If your relative already has a named worker, call 01392 383000. For an emergency out of hours, call 0345 600 0388, option 1. Teignbridge District Council handles council tax, not care.

When is Newton Abbot's Urgent Treatment Centre open?

Every day from 8am to 8pm, including bank holidays, at Newton Abbot Community Hospital, West Golds Road, Jetty Marsh. Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust asks people to book a same-day appointment on 01626 324631. You can still walk in, but booked patients are seen first, so walk-ins wait longer unless it is an emergency. X-ray runs from 9am to 5pm every day except Christmas Day; the trust suggests calling before you travel. It is not an A&E: the nearest Emergency Department is at Torbay Hospital in Torquay.

Is there community transport in Newton Abbot?

Yes. Newton Abbot Community Transport Association, a local charity, runs Ring and Ride minibuses that collect people from home and bring them into town, returning after about two hours, on set days for Newton Abbot and villages such as Abbotskerswell, Ipplepen, Kingskerswell, Kingsteignton and Ogwell. Its volunteer Car Service takes people to medical appointments, including at Torbay, Exeter and Derriford hospitals, in wheelchair-accessible vehicles; advance booking is essential. Call 01626 335775 (transport office Monday to Friday, 9am to 4.45pm).

How much does live-in care cost in Newton Abbot?

Live-in care with Day and Nightcare costs from £1,550 a week in Newton Abbot, the same as everywhere in England, for one person with a carer who rests at night. That includes our care team's management (the assessment, care plan, reviews, supervision and the on-call manager) and the carer's food; break cover and the carer's travel are extra. For a couple it is from £1,800 a week, where one carer can safely meet both partners' needs. You receive a written quote after a free assessment.

Can the council help pay for live-in care in Newton Abbot?

Yes, if the person's care needs meet the national eligibility criteria and their savings are below £23,250 (2026/27). Adult social care in Newton Abbot is arranged by Devon County Council. Ask for a care needs assessment; if you are eligible, council funding can usually be taken as a direct payment and used for live-in care from us.

Can live-in care start when someone leaves Torbay Hospital?

It can. Tell us the expected discharge date as early as you can, and we will work with you and the ward's discharge team on when live-in care can start. We can often start within 24 to 48 hours of the assessment, depending on carer availability, and we confirm the start date once a carer is arranged. We have provided Discharge to Assess (D2A) care since 2014.
