Our care, where you live

Our live-in care in Teignmouth

Live-in care means one-to-one support in your own home: personal care, medication support, meals, help around the house, getting out and about, and someone close by at night. Whether it suits the person, and whether one carer can support a couple, is worked out at the free assessment. Read more in live-in care explained and how it works day to day.

How we arrange live-in care in Teignmouth

Day and Nightcare provides fully managed live-in care in Teignmouth, Shaldon and the villages around them, from £1,550 a week. One main carer lives in the home; a relief carer covers their holidays and time off, and a manager is on call. Care starts with a free assessment, a written quote and a written care plan.

Care can be paid for privately, by Devon County Council (including direct payments) or by NHS Continuing Healthcare. We have provided Discharge to Assess (D2A) care since 2014. If someone is in hospital, tell us the expected discharge date (see care after hospital). Our care team is on 01865 715780.

After a hospital stay or illness, ask about the council’s free Social Care Reablement Service, typically for one to four weeks. See our reablement guide.

Devon’s upper capital limit is £23,250: above it, your relative pays the full cost of council-arranged care. For care at home, the house they live in is not counted. Charging questions go to Client Financial Services on 01392 384391 (weekdays 9am to 1pm). See council funding for care.

Family carers can book a carer’s assessment through the Caring in Devon Helpline on 03456 434 435 (weekdays 8am to 5pm), by phone or in person; the person you care for does not need to have services.

Teignbridge District Council collects council tax (01626 361101). Three reductions help:

  • a carer who lives with someone and gives at least 35 hours of care a week is not counted, if the carer is not their partner and the person cared for receives a benefit such as Attendance Allowance
  • someone who is severely mentally impaired is not counted; the form includes a medical certificate signed by their doctor, which Teignbridge says costs nothing
  • a Disabled Band Reduction bills an adapted home one band lower

None is automatic. See council tax discounts for care.

Urgent care and leaving hospital in Teignmouth

  • Minor injuries: Teignmouth has no minor injuries unit, and Dawlish’s is closed. Book a same-day appointment at Newton Abbot Urgent Treatment Centre (01626 324631, 8am to 8pm daily; walk-ins wait longer). It is not an A&E.
  • A&E: the Emergency Department at Torbay Hospital in Torquay (01803 654003).

At Torbay Hospital, planning for home starts at admission, and a discharge coordinator talks through options, funding and practicalities. Intermediate care, rapid response and reablement teams can help at first, and some people move to a community hospital to build up their strength.

Teignmouth Community Hospital on Mill Lane runs outpatient clinics and day surgery (reception weekdays 8.30am to 5pm, 01626 772161).

If health needs are the main issue, ask about NHS Continuing Healthcare. For Teignmouth it is run by the Torbay and South Devon team at Sherborne House, Newton Abbot (01626 357820), usually starting with the Checklist, completed by a nurse or social worker.

Who do I call in Teignmouth to ask for a care assessment?

Call Devon County Council's Adult Social Care on 0345 155 1007 (Monday to Thursday 9am to 5pm, Friday 9am to 4pm) and choose the Care Direct Plus Southern team, which covers Teignmouth. You can also start with the council's online self-help tool, which may lead to an online self-assessment; staff will help if you need it. If your relative already has a named worker, call 01392 383000. For an emergency out of hours, call 0345 600 0388, option 1. Teignbridge District Council collects council tax but does not arrange care.

Where do people in Teignmouth go for A&E and minor injuries?

The nearest Emergency Department (A&E) is at Torbay Hospital, Lowes Bridge, Torquay (01803 654003). Teignmouth Community Hospital on Mill Lane runs outpatient clinics and day surgery but lists no minor injuries unit, and the unit at Dawlish Community Hospital is closed because of staff shortages. For a minor injury, book a same-day appointment at Newton Abbot Urgent Treatment Centre on 01626 324631 (8am to 8pm every day, including bank holidays). If you are unsure, call 111.

Is there local help for someone coming home from hospital in Teignmouth?

Yes. Volunteering in Health, a charity based at Teignmouth Hospital, supports people in Teignmouth, Dawlish and Chudleigh. It helps with transport to medical appointments, practical help around the house and coming home from hospital, and offers one-to-one home visits for people with dementia or life-limiting conditions and their carers. Call 01626 771695. Devon County Council can also provide free short-term reablement, typically for one to four weeks (0345 155 1007).

Where can families find dementia support in Teignmouth?

Start with the GP, who can refer to the Devon Dementia Assessment Service; its clinic for Torbay, South and West Devon is at Lowes Bridge, Torquay (01803 396 520). Allow up to three hours and bring a relative or close friend. In town, the Teignmouth and Shaldon Memory Cafe meets every Thursday from 10am to noon at the Alice Cross Centre on Bitton Park Road. Volunteering in Health (01626 771695) also visits people with dementia and their carers at home.

How much does live-in care cost in Teignmouth?

Live-in care with Day and Nightcare costs from £1,550 a week in Teignmouth, the same as everywhere in England, for one person with a carer who rests at night. That includes our care team's management (the assessment, care plan, reviews, supervision and the on-call manager) and the carer's food; break cover and the carer's travel are extra. For a couple it is from £1,800 a week, where one carer can safely meet both partners' needs. You receive a written quote after a free assessment.

Can the council help pay for live-in care in Teignmouth?

Yes, if the person's care needs meet the national eligibility criteria and their savings are below £23,250 (2026/27). Adult social care in Teignmouth is arranged by Devon County Council. Ask for a care needs assessment; if you are eligible, council funding can usually be taken as a direct payment and used for live-in care from us.

Can live-in care start when someone leaves Torbay Hospital?

It can. Tell us the expected discharge date as early as you can, and we will work with you and the ward's discharge team on when live-in care can start. We can often start within 24 to 48 hours of the assessment, depending on carer availability, and we confirm the start date once a carer is arranged. We have provided Discharge to Assess (D2A) care since 2014.
