Our care, where you live
Our live-in care in Dawlish
Live-in care means one-to-one support in your own home: personal care, medication support, meals, help around the house, getting out and about, and someone close by at night. Whether it suits the person, and whether one carer can support a couple, is worked out at the free assessment. Read more in live-in care explained and how it works day to day.
How we arrange live-in care in Dawlish
Day and Nightcare provides fully managed live-in care in Dawlish and the villages around it, from £1,550 a week. One main carer lives in the home; a relief carer covers their holidays and time off, and a manager is on call. Care starts with a free assessment, a written quote and a written care plan.
Care can be paid for privately, by Devon County Council (including direct payments) or by NHS Continuing Healthcare. We have provided Discharge to Assess (D2A) care since 2014. If someone is in hospital, tell us the expected discharge date (see care after hospital). Our care team is on 01865 715780.
Arranging care and funding in Dawlish

After a hospital stay or illness, ask about the free Social Care Reablement Service, typically for one to four weeks. See our reablement guide.
Above £23,250 in capital your relative pays the full cost of council-arranged care, but for care at home the house they live in is not counted. Charging questions go to Client Financial Services on 01392 384391 (weekdays 9am to 1pm). See council funding for care.
Family carers can book a carer’s assessment through the Caring in Devon Helpline on 03456 434 435 (weekdays 8am to 5pm), by phone or in person; the person you care for does not need to be receiving services.
Teignbridge District Council collects council tax (01626 361101). Ask about:
- the carer reduction, where a carer lives with someone (not their partner) and gives at least 35 hours of care a week, and that person receives a benefit such as Attendance Allowance
- the severe mental impairment reduction, with a medical certificate the doctor signs at no cost; a home where everyone qualifies may be exempt
- the Disabled Band Reduction, which bills an adapted home one band lower
None is automatic. See council tax discounts for care.
Urgent care and leaving hospital in Dawlish
- Minor injuries: the Minor Injuries Unit at Dawlish Community Hospital is closed because of staff shortages. Call 111 first, or book Newton Abbot Urgent Treatment Centre (01626 324631, 8am to 8pm daily; walk-ins wait longer). Totnes Minor Injuries Unit also books same-day (01803 862622, option 1, 8am to 5pm). Neither is an A&E.
- A&E: the Emergency Departments are at Torbay Hospital in Torquay (01803 654003) and at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital (Wonford) in Exeter.
At Torbay Hospital, planning for home starts at admission, and a discharge coordinator talks through options, funding and practicalities. At the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, the discharge lounge near the main entrance is open 7.30am to 8pm on weekdays and 10am to 6pm at weekends and bank holidays; its team contacts family and orders transport.
Dawlish Community Hospital on Barton Terrace (01626 868500) is a base for intermediate care, district nurses and X-ray. The trust lists it among the community hospitals where someone may stay for more care or rehabilitation before going home.
If health needs are the main issue, ask about NHS Continuing Healthcare. For Dawlish it is run by the Torbay and South Devon team at Sherborne House, Newton Abbot (01626 357820), usually starting with the Checklist, completed by a nurse or social worker.

Your questions
Questions about live-in care in Dawlish
Who do I call in Dawlish to ask for a care assessment?
Call Devon County Council's Adult Social Care on 0345 155 1007 (Monday to Thursday 9am to 5pm, Friday 9am to 4pm) and choose the Care Direct Plus Southern team, which covers Dawlish. You can also start with the council's online self-help tool, which may lead to an online self-assessment; staff will help if you need it. If your relative already has a named worker, call 01392 383000. For an emergency out of hours, call 0345 600 0388, option 1. Teignbridge District Council collects council tax but does not arrange care.
Is the minor injuries unit in Dawlish open?
Not at present. Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust says the Minor Injuries Unit at Dawlish Community Hospital is closed because of staff shortages, and asks people to call 111 or use NHS 111 online (linked in the sources below) first. Its open services are Newton Abbot Urgent Treatment Centre (book a same-day appointment on 01626 324631, 8am to 8pm every day) and Totnes Minor Injuries Unit (01803 862622, option 1, 8am to 5pm every day). Neither is an A&E. For serious emergencies, call 999.
Is there community transport in Dawlish?
Yes. Dawlish Community Transport, run by the East Teignbridge Community Transport Association from Barton Hill Car Park, has a weekday door-to-door Ring and Ride for East Teignbridge, from Exminster through to Ideford, and a volunteer car scheme for GP, hospital and social appointments, where booking ahead is essential. Weekly shopping trips go to Newton Abbot on Wednesdays (£8), Teignmouth on Thursdays (£6.50) and Torquay on Fridays (£9.50). Call 01626 888890, Monday to Friday, 9am to 3pm.
How much does live-in care cost in Dawlish?
Live-in care with Day and Nightcare costs from £1,550 a week in Dawlish, the same as everywhere in England, for one person with a carer who rests at night. That includes our care team's management (the assessment, care plan, reviews, supervision and the on-call manager) and the carer's food; break cover and the carer's travel are extra. For a couple it is from £1,800 a week, where one carer can safely meet both partners' needs. You receive a written quote after a free assessment.
Can the council help pay for live-in care in Dawlish?
Yes, if the person's care needs meet the national eligibility criteria and their savings are below £23,250 (2026/27). Adult social care in Dawlish is arranged by Devon County Council. Ask for a care needs assessment; if you are eligible, council funding can usually be taken as a direct payment and used for live-in care from us.
Can live-in care start when someone leaves Torbay Hospital?
It can. Tell us the expected discharge date as early as you can, and we will work with you and the ward's discharge team on when live-in care can start. We can often start within 24 to 48 hours of the assessment, depending on carer availability, and we confirm the start date once a carer is arranged. We have provided Discharge to Assess (D2A) care since 2014.
