Our care, where you live
Our live-in care in Paignton
Live-in care means one-to-one support in your own home: personal care, medication support, meals, help around the house, getting out and about, and someone close by at night. Whether it suits the person, and whether one carer can support a couple, is worked out at the free assessment. Read more in live-in care explained and how it works day to day.
How we arrange live-in care in Paignton
Day and Nightcare provides fully managed live-in care in Paignton, from £1,550 a week. One main carer lives in the home; a relief carer covers their holidays and time off, and a manager is on call. Care starts with a free assessment, a written quote and a written care plan.
Care can be paid for privately, by Torbay Council (including direct payments) or by NHS Continuing Healthcare. We have provided Discharge to Assess (D2A) care since 2014. If someone is in hospital, tell us the expected discharge date (see care after hospital). Our care team is on 01865 715780.
Arranging care and funding in Paignton
Torbay Council is responsible for adult social care and council tax in Paignton; Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust runs adult social care on its behalf. To ask for help, call 01803 219700. Where needs are more complex, a full care needs assessment follows; it may look at short-term support to recover from an illness, or at equipment and technology. A trained financial assessor then looks at income and savings: with more than £23,250 your relative pays the full cost, and for care at home their own home is not counted. If they pay in full, the council can still arrange care. See paying for live-in care.

Carers can ask Signposts for Carers (01803 666620) for a carer’s assessment, which Torbay calls a carer’s health and wellbeing check. There is no financial assessment.
Torbay Council’s council tax reductions:
- 25% off when a live-in carer gives at least 35 hours of care a week to someone (not their partner) who receives a qualifying benefit such as Attendance Allowance, or when someone is severely mentally impaired, if without them only one adult lives there
- the disabled person’s band reduction, which moves the bill down a band where the home has, for example, an extra bathroom or room for a wheelchair indoors; the council visits before it decides
You must apply. See council tax discounts for care.
Urgent care and leaving hospital in Paignton
- A&E: the Emergency Department at Torbay Hospital, Torquay (01803 654003).
- Minor injuries: Paignton has no minor injuries unit. Book a same-day appointment at Newton Abbot Urgent Treatment Centre (01626 324631, 8am to 8pm every day; walk-ins wait longer) or Totnes Minor Injuries Unit (01803 862622, option 1, 8am to 5pm). Neither is an A&E.
At Torbay Hospital, planning for home starts on admission, and a discharge coordinator talks with you about options, funding and practicalities. Some people need a short spell of rehabilitation first, in a community hospital or a care home; the trust’s community hospitals include Brixham, with a 20-bed inpatient ward.
If your relative’s needs are mainly health needs, ask about NHS Continuing Healthcare. Torbay and South Devon’s Continuing Healthcare team covers Paignton (01626 357820); appeals should be made within six months of the decision letter. Take our questions to ask before discharge to the ward.

Your questions
Questions about live-in care in Paignton
Who do I call in Paignton to ask for a care assessment?
Paignton is in the Torbay Council area, so call Torbay's adult social care advisers on 01803 219700 (non-urgent email: tsdft.customerservices@nhs.net). An adviser talks through what your relative can do and where they need help; where needs are more complex, the council carries out a full care needs assessment. A trained financial assessor then works out any contribution. Out of hours, in an emergency, call the Torbay Emergency Duty Service on 0300 456 4876.
Is there a hospital in Paignton?
Paignton Health and Wellbeing Centre, on the old Paignton Hospital site in Church Street, runs outpatient and community clinics from Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm (01803 547171), including a Parkinson's specialist nurse, a continence clinic, audiology with hearing aid repairs, podiatry and physiotherapy. It is not an A&E or a minor injuries unit. The A&E is at Torbay Hospital in Torquay; for minor injuries, book a same-day slot at Newton Abbot Urgent Treatment Centre on 01626 324631.
Where can carers get support in Paignton?
Paignton Carers' Centre is in Room 17 at Paignton Library, Great Western Road, open Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm; Signposts for Carers is on 01803 666620. It can arrange a carer's health and wellbeing check and register you with Torbay Carers, which brings a Carer Passport: free parking at local hospitals when you are supporting the person you care for, local discounts including a free MyBay card, and an emergency back-up plan.
Is there transport for older people in Paignton who cannot manage the bus?
Torbay Council's information service says no organisation offers free door-to-door transport in Torbay. Karing Voluntary Group, on Torquay Road in Preston, provides volunteer transport to medical appointments for older and disabled people (01803 524799); the cars are not wheelchair accessible and drivers cannot help people in and out. The NHS Hospital Car Service is based at Torbay Hospital (01803 656777). Free bus passes come from Torbay Council's Concessionary Fares team on 01803 207766.
How much does live-in care cost in Paignton?
Live-in care with Day and Nightcare costs from £1,550 a week in Paignton, the same as everywhere in England, for one person with a carer who rests at night. That includes our care team's management (the assessment, care plan, reviews, supervision and the on-call manager) and the carer's food; break cover and the carer's travel are extra. For a couple it is from £1,800 a week, where one carer can safely meet both partners' needs. You receive a written quote after a free assessment.
Can the council help pay for live-in care in Paignton?
Yes, if the person's care needs meet the national eligibility criteria and their savings are below £23,250 (2026/27). Adult social care in Paignton is arranged by Torbay Council. Ask for a care needs assessment; if you are eligible, council funding can usually be taken as a direct payment and used for live-in care from us.
Can live-in care start when someone leaves Torbay Hospital?
It can. Tell us the expected discharge date as early as you can, and we will work with you and the ward's discharge team on when live-in care can start. We can often start within 24 to 48 hours of the assessment, depending on carer availability, and we confirm the start date once a carer is arranged. We have provided Discharge to Assess (D2A) care since 2014.
