Our care, where you live

Our live-in care in Rugby

Live-in care means one-to-one support in your own home: personal care, medication support, meals, help around the house, getting out and about, and someone close by at night. Whether it suits the person, and whether one carer can support a couple, is worked out at the free assessment. Read more in live-in care explained and how it works day to day.

How we arrange live-in care in Rugby

Day and Nightcare provides fully managed live-in care in Rugby and the villages around it, from £1,550 a week. One main carer lives in the home; a relief carer covers their holidays and time off, and a manager is on call. Care starts with a free assessment, a written quote and a written care plan.

Care can be paid for privately, by Warwickshire County Council (including direct payments) or by NHS Continuing Healthcare. We have provided Discharge to Assess (D2A) care since 2014. If someone is in hospital, tell us the expected discharge date (see care after hospital). Our care team is on 01865 715780.

A financial assessment decides what your relative pays. With savings over £23,250 they would usually pay the full cost, but the home is not counted for care at home. For home care the council arranges, the most it charges from April 2026 is £26.44 an hour; its Financial Assessments and Benefits Advice Team is on 01926 413985. Council funding can be taken as a direct payment.

If you help a relative, ask Caring Together Warwickshire for a free carer’s assessment on freephone 0800 197 5544.

Rugby Borough Council collects council tax. Its discounts page has forms for the carer and severely mentally impaired discounts. For the disabled person reduction (an extra room or indoor wheelchair space needed by a disabled resident), a council inspector visits, and the bill is then charged at the band below. See council tax discounts for care.

Urgent care and leaving hospital in Rugby

  • Urgent treatment: the Rugby Urgent Treatment Centre at the Hospital of St Cross, Barby Road, is open 24 hours, every day, for minor injuries and illnesses in people over five, with X-rays (reception 01788 663432). It is not an A&E.
  • A&E: University Hospital, Clifford Bridge Road, Coventry, has a 24-hour Emergency Department.

St Cross also has 44 elderly care inpatient rehabilitation beds. Inpatients at University Hospital who need short-term physiotherapy or occupational therapy may move there, to a therapy gym and assessment kitchen. On the day of discharge, patients usually wait in the discharge lounge while medicines, and transport if needed, are arranged.

For Warwickshire residents with new or increased needs, the NHS-funded Discharge to Assess scheme usually means the Community Recovery Service: free home care for up to six weeks, with up to four visits a day, or a free stay of up to four weeks in one of the council’s care homes. A Care Act assessment follows about four weeks after discharge home.

NHS Continuing Healthcare is arranged by NHS Coventry and Warwickshire Integrated Care Board; for a Rugby GP, email cwicb.swchcgeneral@nhs.net.

What may change soon

On 29 October 2026 the Government said it is minded to create two unitary councils for Warwickshire, with Rugby in the northern one. This is proposed, not confirmed; the councils say new councils would start in April 2029. Until then, the county council arranges adult social care and Rugby Borough Council collects council tax.

Your questions

Questions about live-in care in Rugby

Who do I call in Rugby to ask for a care assessment?

Call Warwickshire County Council's adult social care team on 01926 359190 (Monday to Thursday 9am to 5pm, Friday 9am to 4.30pm), or use the council's online form (linked from its assessment page under Useful contacts on this page) if your relative has no support from adult social care yet. Rugby Borough Council does not arrange care; it handles council tax. Out of hours, the emergency duty social worker is on 01926 886922. For your own carer's assessment, call Caring Together Warwickshire on freephone 0800 197 5544.

Is there an A&E in Rugby?

No. The Rugby Urgent Treatment Centre at the Hospital of St Cross on Barby Road is open 24 hours a day, every day, for minor injuries and illnesses in people over the age of five, with X-rays and a pharmacy. Its reception is on 01788 663432. It is not an A&E: anyone with a severe illness or injury should go to the Emergency Department at University Hospital, Coventry, which is open 24 hours, or call 999.

Can a carer get a council tax discount in Rugby?

Possibly. Rugby Borough Council does not count a carer who lives with the person, gives an average of at least 35 hours of care a week, and is not their partner or a child under 18, as long as the person cared for receives a qualifying benefit such as Attendance Allowance or the daily living part of PIP. There are separate downloadable forms for this, for the severely mentally impaired discount (which needs a doctor's certificate) and for the disabled person reduction.

Is there transport for people in the villages around Rugby?

Yes. IndieGo Rugby is the county council's wheelchair-accessible dial-a-ride to and from Rugby and its villages, including Dunchurch, Wolston, Brinklow, Long Lawford and the new Houlton development, for people who cannot make the journey because of mobility or a lack of public transport. It runs Monday to Friday between 9am and 2.30pm (3.30pm in school holidays); a single journey costs £3 and concessionary passes are valid. Register and book on 01926 742000 (Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 3.30pm).

Where can families find hospice support in Rugby?

The Myton Hospices run the Rugby Myton Support Hub at the Hospital of St Cross on Barby Road. It offers emotional and practical support, drop-in sessions and wellbeing activities for adults with a life-limiting illness, and the people caring for them, who are registered with a GP in Coventry or Warwickshire. No referral or appointment is needed. The county council's directory lists it as open Tuesday to Thursday, 9.30am to 4.30pm; call 01788 550085 to check before you go.

How much does live-in care cost in Rugby?

Live-in care with Day and Nightcare costs from £1,550 a week in Rugby, the same as everywhere in England, for one person with a carer who rests at night. That includes our care team's management (the assessment, care plan, reviews, supervision and the on-call manager) and the carer's food; break cover and the carer's travel are extra. For a couple it is from £1,800 a week, where one carer can safely meet both partners' needs. You receive a written quote after a free assessment.

Can the council help pay for live-in care in Rugby?

Yes, if the person's care needs meet the national eligibility criteria and their savings are below £23,250 (2026/27). Adult social care in Rugby is arranged by Warwickshire County Council. Ask for a care needs assessment; if you are eligible, council funding can usually be taken as a direct payment and used for live-in care from us.

Can live-in care start when someone leaves University Hospital, Coventry?

It can. Tell us the expected discharge date as early as you can, and we will work with you and the ward's discharge team on when live-in care can start. We can often start within 24 to 48 hours of the assessment, depending on carer availability, and we confirm the start date once a carer is arranged. We have provided Discharge to Assess (D2A) care since 2014.
