Our care, where you live

Our live-in care in Portishead

Live-in care means one-to-one support in your own home: personal care, medication support, meals, help around the house, getting out and about, and someone close by at night. Whether it suits the person, and whether one carer can support a couple, is worked out at the free assessment. Read more in live-in care explained and how it works day to day.

How we arrange live-in care in Portishead

Day and Nightcare provides fully managed live-in care in Portishead and the villages around it, from £1,550 a week. One main carer lives in the home; a relief carer covers their holidays and time off, and a manager is on call. Care starts with a free assessment, a written quote and a written care plan.

Care can be paid for privately, by North Somerset Council (including direct payments) or by NHS Continuing Healthcare. We have provided Discharge to Assess (D2A) care since 2014. If someone is in hospital, tell us the expected discharge date (see care after hospital). Our care team is on 01865 715780.

If the council may help to pay, a financial assessment follows: with more than £23,250 in savings people usually pay in full, and the home is not counted for care at home. See council funding for care. If your relative will pay for their own care, North Somerset Council’s free Care Navigator service gives impartial advice by phone or a home visit.

A family carer can ask for a carer’s assessment through Care Connect or the online carer self-referral form.

For council tax, ask about:

  • a severe cognitive disorder reduction (the council’s term for severe mental impairment), with a doctor’s certificate and a qualifying benefit such as Attendance Allowance
  • a live-in carer, not a spouse or partner, who gives at least 35 hours of care a week is not counted, if the person cared for gets a qualifying benefit
  • a band reduction for disabled people where the home has been adapted

Urgent care and leaving hospital in Portishead

  • Minor injuries: the walk-in Minor Injury Unit at North Somerset Community Hospital in Clevedon (01275 546852), open 8am to 8pm, with X-ray every day for part of the day. It is not an A&E. It may close earlier than these times when demand is very high, so call NHS 111 if unsure.
  • Emergency departments: Weston General Hospital (01934 636363), whose emergency department is not open overnight (the trust gives 8am to 10pm; the NHS website lists 8pm closing for adults on some days), and the Bristol Royal Infirmary (adults) and Southmead Hospital, both open 24 hours.

After a hospital stay, the council’s TRI team gives free short-term reablement and telecare, usually for up to six weeks: a keyworker sets goals with your relative, and support can include reablement visits, a trial of telecare such as falls detectors or memory aids, and equipment. Referrals come from council staff, Sirona’s Discharge to Assess therapists or the hospitals’ Transfer of Care hubs, so ask the ward.

For mainly health needs, ask about NHS Continuing Healthcare: NHS Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire ICB is on 0117 900 2626 or bnssg.chcteam@nhs.net.

Your questions

Questions about live-in care in Portishead

Who do I call in Portishead to ask for a care assessment?

Call North Somerset Council's Care Connect on 01275 888 801 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm), email careconnect@n-somerset.gov.uk or use the online self-referral form. Portishead is not in the Somerset Council area. Outside Care Connect's hours, the Emergency Duty Team is on 01454 615165. A family carer can ask for a carer's assessment through Care Connect too.

Where is the nearest A&E to Portishead?

The nearest 24-hour emergency departments are in Bristol: Southmead Hospital and, for adults, the Bristol Royal Infirmary. Weston General's emergency department is not open overnight. For minor injuries, the walk-in Minor Injury Unit at North Somerset Community Hospital in Clevedon is open 8am to 8pm; it is not an A&E. In a life-threatening emergency, call 999; otherwise call NHS 111 for advice.

How much does live-in care cost in Portishead?

Live-in care with Day and Nightcare costs from £1,550 a week in Portishead, the same as everywhere in England, for one person with a carer who rests at night. That includes our care team's management (the assessment, care plan, reviews, supervision and the on-call manager) and the carer's food; break cover and the carer's travel are extra. For a couple it is from £1,800 a week, where one carer can safely meet both partners' needs. You receive a written quote after a free assessment.

Can the council help pay for live-in care in Portishead?

Yes, if the person's care needs meet the national eligibility criteria and their savings are below £23,250 (2026/27). Adult social care in Portishead is arranged by North Somerset Council. Ask for a care needs assessment; if you are eligible, council funding can usually be taken as a direct payment and used for live-in care from us.

Can live-in care start when someone leaves Southmead Hospital?

It can. Tell us the expected discharge date as early as you can, and we will work with you and the ward's discharge team on when live-in care can start. We can often start within 24 to 48 hours of the assessment, depending on carer availability, and we confirm the start date once a carer is arranged. We have provided Discharge to Assess (D2A) care since 2014.
