Our care, where you live

Our live-in care in Tewkesbury

Live-in care means one-to-one support in your own home: personal care, medication support, meals, help around the house, getting out and about, and someone close by at night. Whether it suits the person, and whether one carer can support a couple, is worked out at the free assessment. Read more in live-in care explained and how it works day to day.

How we arrange live-in care in Tewkesbury

Day and Nightcare provides fully managed live-in care in Tewkesbury and the villages around it, from £1,550 a week. One main carer lives in the home; a relief carer covers their holidays and time off, and a manager is on call. Care starts with a free assessment, a written quote and a written care plan.

Care can be paid for privately, by Gloucestershire County Council (including direct payments) or by NHS Continuing Healthcare. We have provided Discharge to Assess (D2A) care since 2014. The Government is minded to create a single unitary council for Gloucestershire, taking over in April 2029 (proposed, not confirmed). Until then, the county council arranges adult social care and Tewkesbury Borough Council collects council tax.

Your questions

Questions about live-in care in Tewkesbury

Who do I call in Tewkesbury to ask for a care assessment?

Call Gloucestershire County Council's Adult Social Care Helpdesk on 01452 426 868, Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm, or email socialcare.enq@gloucestershire.gov.uk. Adult social care is run by the county council, not Tewkesbury Borough Council. The helpdesk talks through your relative's needs and arranges an assessment if one is needed, and the assessment is free. In a serious social care emergency out of hours, call the Emergency Duty Team on 01452 614 194. Family carers can ask the Gloucestershire Carers Hub (0300 111 9000) for a free carer's assessment.

Does Tewkesbury Hospital have an A&E?

No. Tewkesbury Hospital on Barton Road has a Minor Injury and Illness Unit, usually open 8am to 8pm every day with last walk-in arrivals at 7.30pm. X-ray opening times are limited, so call NHS 111 first. The nearest A&E departments are at Cheltenham General, consultant-led from 8am to 8pm with a nurse-led service overnight, and Gloucestershire Royal in Gloucester, open 24 hours. In a life-threatening emergency, call 999.

What help is there in Tewkesbury if a flood is forecast and my relative cannot manage sandbags?

When flooding is forecast or happening, Tewkesbury Borough Council puts out sand and empty sandbags for residents to collect and fill; four to six sandbags usually protect a standard doorway. A vulnerable resident who cannot collect or fill sandbags should call the council on 01684 295010, or 01684 293445 out of hours. In a major flood it delivers filled sandbags to vulnerable people who have an assisted bin collection with the council.

Is there a day centre in Tewkesbury for someone with dementia?

Yes. Tewkesbury Day Centre on Station Road is run by Gloucestershire County Council for older people with dementia, mental health difficulties or neurological conditions such as Parkinson's. It opens Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm, and its aim is to give carers a short break. There is a charge. Contact the centre on 01452 425384, or ask the Adult Social Care Helpdesk on 01452 426 868.

How much does live-in care cost in Tewkesbury?

Live-in care with Day and Nightcare costs from £1,550 a week in Tewkesbury, the same as everywhere in England, for one person with a carer who rests at night. That includes our care team's management (the assessment, care plan, reviews, supervision and the on-call manager) and the carer's food; break cover and the carer's travel are extra. For a couple it is from £1,800 a week, where one carer can safely meet both partners' needs. You receive a written quote after a free assessment.

Can the council help pay for live-in care in Tewkesbury?

Yes, if the person's care needs meet the national eligibility criteria and their savings are below £23,250 (2026/27). Adult social care in Tewkesbury is arranged by Gloucestershire County Council. Ask for a care needs assessment; if you are eligible, council funding can usually be taken as a direct payment and used for live-in care from us.

Can live-in care start when someone leaves Cheltenham General Hospital?

It can. Tell us the expected discharge date as early as you can, and we will work with you and the ward's discharge team on when live-in care can start. We can often start within 24 to 48 hours of the assessment, depending on carer availability, and we confirm the start date once a carer is arranged. We have provided Discharge to Assess (D2A) care since 2014.
